We present a documentary that explores contemporary art in Indonesia and Southeast Asia — from its beginnings to the present day.

WHY CONTEMPORARY ART?
Because it is a phenomenon we are witnessing in real time.
My research doesn’t lead to books — it leads to real people: gallerists, artists, curators — those who have shaped and are still shaping the history of art.

In exploring contemporary culture, we step outside of our familiar context — geographically, culturally, and personally.
We travel to the other side of the world to break myths and to listen to those who shape meaning from within.

It’s the same as asking whether a person can ever leave behind their own —
to set aside the patterns and expectations shaped by their native culture.

My name is Tina Grushina, and I am the director of this film.
After living in Asia for several years, I met incredibly talented individuals and key figures in the history of contemporary art. I recorded stories to share them with those who are curious about these themes.

The questions raised in the film have gone far beyond its initial educational purpose.
They changed me — my worldview, my way of seeing.
I believe they can do the same for an attentive viewer who is willing to spend an hour as a researcher with an open mind — where one’s own context doesn’t build walls against new perspectives.
